Wierd sad movies
So with baby sitting a friends cats latly I've had a lot of time to just hang out and watch hbo, we have hbo at home but for some reason they're never playing anything I'd want to watch when I'm home. Eitherway hanging out with the cats and watching the tube the other day and i see this movie i've been waiting for (of course can't remember the title) but it's the life story of peter sellers. In case you don't know who he is he played the lead in the pink panther movies along with a host of other movies and radio shows. Really great sad movie about a lost funny guy. If you have any intrest in his movies or him you'll probably enjoy it.
The other movie (which was on bravo so it has nothing to do with the introduction of this post) was a wierd movie about the director of frankenstien and bride of frankenstien, started watching the movie at what I think was about half way mark, and the only reall reason i even stopped at it long enough to find out anything about it was I saw ian mckellen and brendan fraser. Kind of wierd, had a kind of sad/happy ending, well more sad with some happy thrown in.
That is all. Carry on.

Warcraft
There are a few game franchises i love, final fantasy, warcraft, civilization, zelda. But warcraft is one of my favorites above all others (except final fantasy, of course) it's funny, diffectult with out being irratating, the setting is reasonably original feeling (considering it's a fantasy setting that's fucking amazing). And now low world of warcraft has been released, and with luck i should be getting it for xmas, and if i don't i'll be going out and getting it for my self for xmas, my own little gift to me.
i don't really know how to explain it, but blizzard and square are two companies that can produce products that you don't even really need to check reviews, you just know will be good, and though square is starting to slip a bit, blizzard at least is till at that point. they just take so much time and care to crafting their game.
so to prepair for world of warcraft i reinstalled warcraft 3 and frozen throne, if i could find it i'd prolly install warcraft 2, been just playing each night enjoying the fun of the games, it's another set of games that i really have trouble finding anything wrong with, which is why all the above kind of sucks, i'm much better at taking something that's not that great and pointing out its flaws painfully and amusingly.
well back to my comics and looking at screen shot after screen shot of wold of warcraft :)
Current state: excited (it's almost xmas)

Identity Crisis
Eric Burns over at websnark there is a post about identity crisis, which is a kind of funny since i just read the main 7 issue arc last night.
"The "shocking twist ending" was straight out of the last ten minutes of a melodramatic TV movie, right down to the "smiling, calm, insane discussion." Hack work at best, in my not so humble opinion, and utterly out of place in the world of DC Comics."
I couldn't agree more, it felt like such a waste, i'm not even that big of a DC fan, but man after you finish ID you feel a little cheated. I personaly didn't mind the first issue, interesting, cool little story could have done a lot with it, then you finish the last issue and just look at it going, "what the hell is this, this is the ending?" total crap.
Eric also goes on to talk about the loss of comics for younger ages, actually more of the core characters no longer being written for kids anymore. And to an extent he's right, if you pick up superman or Spiderman anymore little is applicable or appropriate for younger readers, but I know at least marvel has made some attempts with the Marvel Age line to keep at least some main favorite characters approachable for kids.
I don't know, you can have a huge discussion on the pros and cons of writing to an aging comic populace or trying to write for new younger readers, either way it seems marvel is making some attempt at both, i'm sure dc is too in some way, i just don't keep up with their books enough to know.

FFTA
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance now i'm the first to admit i'm a final fantasy whore, or for that matter almost anything square has made. But with FFTA i'm really feeling those old addition kind of urges like with FF7, evertime i get a chance i find my GBA pop in my flash cart and start playing. There's just so much that's done well, i could go on gushing about this game like others have but damn it's fun. get it, play it, love it.
Angry Rating: 8.5/10 the game really is a lot of fun, even if it is a little bit of niche title (portable turn based fantasy)

Neverwhere
I just finished neverwhere, about 2 minutes ago. I feel abit like I did when i finished Sandman, kind of an odd sad feeling, little more then the usualy pangs of finishing a good book. Neverwhere is a book i wholly enjoyed, my only complaint would be the ending, perhaps there could have been a bit more to it, but other than that it was really fantastic, you care about the characters, the villians are interesting and evil, there's an odd bit of english humor through out that lightens the tone, all and all a great read. It's hard to talk about though, so little can be said with out ruining the book.
Everytime i read something by gaiman, i think about my stories and am a bit discoraged, he has such a way whit characters that i don't seem to be able to develop. Their so...real for lack of a better way of putting it, they have a natural feel to them, hopes dreams desires, they have favorite tv shows, places they like, don't like. I don't maybe i just need to focus more, but i still can only seem to grasp things at a scene to scene level, my characters are so painfully 2 dimensional if i stand them next to his. Though i ges that's why he gets paid and i still work on 5th drafts of the same sections with little ability to string the scenes into a cohesive mass. ugh.
one slightly related note, it is fucking amazing the geographic detail in neverwhere, like with some clive barker books that take place in england, do all the english have some kind of cartography ablity to them? I know they can look things up as their writing, but damn, it flows so well, i've lived places for years and would never be able to write something that has that kind of natural direction sense and a story, i can barly give people directions to and from places i have been a hundred times.

My attention span is almost this short, Book-a-minute

Maximum Overdrive
Now i know it's not the best movie ever made, not even that good of one, but when your a kid Maximum Overdrive is pretty cool, soda machine killer, green goblin truck, evil arcade machines, all the stuff kids love. I also know it's based off a stephen king short story "Trucks", but what i don't know or better, don't understand is why anyone would want to remake this movie. The scenio...
Get home after little sleep and an actualy busy day at work, sit down with some fud infront of the tv, watching the daily show. Commercial time, start flipping around, stop at the scifi channel (which used to be a much loved station then they canceled Farscape..) and I see the movie trucks. I stare for while confused, watching what looks like a tremors the series grade version of maximum overdrive...i check the digital cable guide and yep it's a 1997 (maybe '96) remake, and to quote lewis black "i was confused". Who approves this? They can't make a "Dragonbone Chair" movie, but Maximum Overdrive gets a remake?! WTF
What minor movie exec. is pitched the idea,
"Remember that movie from the '80s where all the machines go apeshit crazy and kill people?"
"Yeah"
"Lets do that again."
"Ok, need to call it something diffent though"
"Already taken care of, it's based on a shortstory called 'Trucks' oh and we can save on costs if we shoot it in my back yard and sell it to the scifi channel"
"Well son i think we have a new vp of productions"
For some reason this is how i'm conviced movies are made, some jerkoff from the mail room pitching ideas to some strung out drama school reject whose one more tv movie away from throwing in the towel and making skinamax movies.
I mean common, "the fly", "godzilla", sometimes it's better or worse than the orignal, that's debatable, but usualy most movie remakes are of movies worth remaking...but fucking trucks!?
Ok, ok, if there going to do crap like this i want to at least see movies that are true classic B movies, "It conquered the world" or "Creature from the Black lagoon" like the way the mummy was remade, or maybe god forbid "the incredible shrinking man" a sad scifi movie with no happy ending.
Aright this has spiraled way past it's initial intention. Done
